The Library

This is the Library, where I have will have lists of my favorite literary works, as well as brief descriptions of those books I am currently reading or those I think others may enjoy.

Favorite Books

Poetry My favorite poet is Rainer Maria Rilke , I also greatly enjoy the works of John Keats and William Wordsworth. All three poets share a similar sense about the greatness and spirituality of nature, which I find so comforting.

Books

  • A Walk in the Woods, by Bill Bryson, an amusing book about the author's experience with the Appalachian Trail!
  • The Mists of Avalon, by Marion Zimmer Bradley
  • Hannibal, Silence of the Lambs, and Red Dragon, all three by Thomas Harris
  • Player Piano, by Kurt Vonnegut
  • The Power of One, by Bryce Courtenay
  • The Brothers Karamazov, by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. All thanks to Daniel for introducing me to this book, which contains facets of every human soul.
  • Middlemarch, by George Elliot
  • The Barefoot Doctor's Guide to the Tao, by Stephen Russell - One of the best books I've read on Taoist philosophy, written in a fun, upbeat manner.
  • Far from the Madding Crowd, by Thomas Hardy

  • The Phantom of the Opera, Gaston Leroux
This has been my favorite story and one of my favorite books ever since I first read it.

  • Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen
. Pride and Prejudice is my favorite Jane Austen novel because it is a great novel for showing certian aspects of human nature, such as our willingness to be given an opinion, or rumour of a person, and accept it without question, based on our own feelings toward that person. There's also the wonderful BBC adaptation of P&P with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle that really shows how they change, it's really worth renting.

In addition, Janet Aylmer wrote Darcy's Story , which is basically Pride and Prejudice written from Mr.Darcy's point of view.

  • Letters to a Young Poet, Rainer Marie Rilke
. This is a book of letters that Rilke wrote to a young man that sent Rilke some of his poems. The beautiful and deep letters Rilke responded with contain some of his thoughts on love, life, and many other things. I found the philosophy about these subjects that Rilke has to be very comforting, and as I have enjoyed his poetry for some time, these letters were a wonderful addition.

  • The Falconer,
. I bought this book for my mom's birthday and ended up reading it myself. It's a story about a woman that discovers she has cancer. She leaves her mundane house and unfaithful husband and goes up to a forested mountain to see the man that trains falcons. He shows her how he trains the birds, and they fall in love. She ends up moving into his home and he cares for her for the time before she moves onto death's door. I think i'll leave the ending to you, but I found it so moving that this book became one of my favourites.

  • The Hero and the Crown, Robin McKinley
. This is a book that I first read when I was probably 13 or 14, and I fell in love with the story of Damar. Everyone needs a favorite fairy tale, and this is mine. I enjoy all of McKinley's books, including the Blue Sword, another story about Damar, and Deerskin, which is heartbreaking at times, but uplifting at the end.

  • The Vampire Lestat, Anne Rice
. Okay, so why do I just have the Vampire Lestat up here and not the rest of the Vampire Chronicles? It's not just because I like Lestat, but because I found this story the easiest to follow, most entertaining, and best written of the others. I enjoy reading the others as well, but I enjoy this book because of they way it shows Lestat's character, his relationships with others and how they change, and his journey through life, and not-quite-death.
