The Shinra Corporation is draining all life from the planet. Five years ago the Shinra Electric Power Company built a Makou draining power plant in the township of Ninulheim. But unfortunatly the reactor went horribly wrong and leveled Nibulheim killing many people including the wife of their associate Barret. The great soldier Sephiroth was reported killed in the incident.
Many former citizens of Nibulheim have now develloped a grudge against the Shinra Electric Power Corporation for draining Makou and for destroying their homes. Five years after the accident many people of Nibulheim and people who are against the Shinra corporation have banded together to form the Anti-Shinra group Avalanche. Some joined the Avalanche to prevent more disastes like Nibulheim from occuring again. Some joined to stop Shinra from continuing to poison the planet. But most have joined for revenge.
The demo of Final Fantasy VII has not completely illustrated the storyline. The demo's storyline opens with the Avalanche attacking a Shinra power plant. For this mission Avalanche member Barrett have hired mercenary Cloud to help in this mission. Cloud pretends to not care about anything but Barret begins to see through this guise when Cloud helps out Avalanche members Biggs and Jesse when they are in trouble. They succeed in bombing the reactor and in the confusion that follows the explosion they escape.
