Born in outer space during the United Earth Government's Expeditionary Mission, Scott Benard is one of the new generation of Robotech Defenders. He is a pilot in the Mars Division, on oe fthe advanced interstellar battalions trying to reclaim Earth from the Invid. He returns to his ancestral planet as one of the only survivors from this advance Robotech detachment. Scott's fiancee, Marlene was killed in the initial battle. When he recovers from the shock of his disastrous landing, Scott sets about to fulfill his mission to reach Reflex Point and join Admiral Rick Hunter's new army at all costs. A natural but sometimes reluctant leader, Scott accumulates other Earth rebels on the way to Reflex Point and forms a resistance force that battles the Invid invaders as they make their way to the ultimate battleground. A moody and driven young man, Scott must relearn the value of friendship from his acquaintances as he moves toward his final goal.

When Scott Bernard meets Lancer, he discovers that this young man is already a seasoned freedom fighter. Lancer has been working undercover as a popular female singing star, Yellow Dancer, a role he created to avoid capture by the Invid. Lancer quits his solo career to join Scott and the others in their fight against the invaders. However, he not only continues to use his alternate identity to spy on the Invid and their supporters, but as a morale-building entertainer in the style of Lynn Minmei. The handsome, androgynous youth is quick to make light of his peculiar situation. He's a good friend to have in times of trouble, a thoughtful advisor and a courageous, talented fighter. It's his ability to see beyond the obvious that helps bring about the tentative peace between Invid and humans at the end of the Third Robotech War.
