In his latest book series, "Star Trek, New Frontier", Peter David put in a few surprises for the unwary Space Cases fan. And thanks to Sage's love of Star Trek, we are able to bring it to you.
In book one, he briefly guest stars several interesting people. Take a look.
On page 101:
"Lieutenant Kristian Ayre at
the conn glanced over his shoulder and said, 'Sir, we are within range of Deep Space
Five. Estimated time of arrival, twenty-two minutes.'"
Then, on the very next page:
"At tactical, Lieutenant Paige said, "Sir, I have been endevoring to hail DS5.
There's a lot of subspace chatter though. I'm having trouble punching through." Cool!
Then, on pages 163 and 164, another familiar face presents itself:
Soleta shrugged off her jacket and hung it carefully in her closet. She made several
quick mental notes regarding lesson plans for tomorrow's class, and-since she was eminently
capable of accomplishing more than one task at a time-she said briskly.
"Computer. Messages."
"Two messages," replied the computer. "Playing first message."
The screen wavered for a moment, and then the image of Commander Seth Goddard from Starfleet Central appeared. His hair graying at the temples, Goddard was all business. "Lieutenant Soleta, this message has a callback command built in. Wait for live transmission, please...
The screen flickered to life and Goddard's image appeared on it. "Ah. Lieutenant.
I appreciate your prompt response."
"How may I help you, sir?"
"You can help me by packing."
She looked at him blankly. "'Packing,' sir? I don't...?"
"You're being reactivated, Lieutenant. You're shipping out next week on the Excalibar.
It goes on for a while, but for that, you'll have to read the book.
In book Three, I found something else.
Captain Hufmin of the damaged vessel Combon, along with two of the refugees--a husband and wife named Boretskee and Cary, who had developed into a kind of leaders-by-default--sat in the conference lounge with Calhoun and Shelby.
They're in book four too, but I think this is where they first appear.
In book five, he snuck in another couple of interesting things.
On page 53, Captain Calhoun, and his commander, Shelby, are arguing.
Shelby is comlaining, "And us, we're..."
"Exploring," Calhoun noted. "Last I checked, that's what Starfleet is supposed to
be all about. Grozit, Eppy, you know that as well as anyone. Better than most, in fact."
She glanced at him. "'Grozit'? Reverting to Xenexian profanity?"
"Xenexian profanity. Sorry. I'll try to watch myself."
"Not on my account, although your command of terran profanity is fairly comprehensive."
"I have an ear for languages."
He uses the word several more times throughout the book.
Acording to Redilana, somewhere in the series:
There's a character named Azizi (Rahi Azizi played Bova)
and the metal is called Staiteium (Jewel STAITE)
In PAD's newest novel, Imzadi II:
On page 186:
The staff slid right through her sweat-soaked palms and struck her squarely in the forehead.
"Lwaxana!"[shouted Worf]
She stood there for a moment, wavering, her eyes wavering and then refocusing.
"Lwaxana, are you all right? Do you want to sit down?"
"Excellent idea, Pierre," Lwaxana announced. "The corn muffins look scrumtious today." And with that utter non sequitur, Lwaxana fell forward like a tree. If Worf hadn't caught her, she would have hit the ground face-first.
On page 320:
Sela walked up to within a few meters of Worf and Will. "You understand that if you refuse... there will be torture involved..."
"Nothing you can do to us is going to change our mind."
"Now, Mr. Riker... who said anything about torturing you?
