From the diary of Megan:

With that taken care of, things quickly got back to normal. As much as they could, anyway. What I didn't really like was the fact that I would have to go on this outing without Aunt Constance, she said that she wasn't feeling up to a trip, something which made the governess smile kind of creepily. It was as if she were hoping that Aunt Constance would back out of the arrangement, and stay at home. Why that was so, well, that part was a thing which no one, except for the governess, knew anything about, a fact which seemed to please her quite a bit.

I really didn't want to have to go, if my guardian wasn't going to, however, if I backed out now, such a thing might not sit too well with my uncle, or for that matter, my mother. Even though that was so, I found that I was probably worrying over nothing, it wasn't going to be for very long, then I would no longer have to deal with the governess. In light of that new situation, I found that it would be a good idea if I went ahead and stuck with the original decision, go out to eat, and enjoy this time that I would have to spend with my family.
