Icewind Dale This game is very melee based, compared to Baldurs Gate II. I would recommend the party Paladin Fighter Fighter Fighter/Thief Fighter/Cleric Fighter/Mage This gives everyone in the party high hit points and combat abilities. The Paladin's lay on hands is an instantaneous heal that comes in handy when someone is taking damage too quickly to be healed by a cleric. Plus there is an excellent Paladin only sword called Pale Justice in the final dungeon. Have the Paladin specialize in large and great swords. The two pure fighters are the combat machines of the group. Make one of the fighters specialize in maces and buy him the Giving Star. It will occasionally heal him, making him last almost endlessly in battle. I would have the other fighter probably specialize in axes, since there are several nice ones along the way. The Fighter/Thief is needed for detecting and disarming traps. I found detect traps the most useful thief skill and pickpockets to be the least useful skill. Depending on your taste you could have the Fighter/Thief be your archer or make him another sword fighter. I prefer swarming the enemy so I made my thief another sword fighter. The Fighter/Cleric is the group's token healer. Since it doesn't matter how many days you use on the game, you can rest as much as you want. The cleric is handy when you need the heal DURING the fight. If you prefer you could use a Fighter/Druid instead. In the Ice chapter you get one of Drizzt's scimitars, which makes a great druid weapon. The Fighter/Mage should be the dagger specialist. Daggers do weak damage but they attack extremely fast which is good for interupting enemy spell casters. Not only that but there are several awesome daggers for mages throughout the game. I first made a human fighter with both 18 strength and 18 intelligence and leveled her to level 9. Then I dual-classed her into a mage. The timing worked well because about the time I really needed magic in my group is when she became a mage. There are two must have spells: Haste and Cloudkill. Although haste will make your party fatigued after it wears off, it makes the whole party fight and run twice as fast as normal. I was able to haste my way through every major battle in the game except one. It was the fight against Pomab in the final tower. He splits himself into multiple images and then teleports around using a wand of lightning. I then used the second essential spell, Cloudkill, which instantly killed Pomab and all his multiple images. |
