The crew of the U.S.S. Voyager is sent on a mission to rescue the crew of a Maquis ship that disappeared in a section of space called The Badlands.

The Maquis is a group of Federation colonists living on the Federation/Cardassian border who did not accept the treaty between the two factions.

While fighting what was turning out to be a losing battle with a Cardassian ship, the Maquis ship, attempting to hide in The Badlands, is met by a spatial displacement wave.

While searching for the Maquis, the crew of Voyager is met by the same displacement wave which transported them to a region of space 70,000 light years from their original position.

In time, the two crews meet and decide to work together for their mutual good. Exploration of the region leads the combined crew to a being called The Caretaker. Unfortunately, The Caretaker dies, and with him goes the only chance for instant return to their own space.

Now, the new crew of Voyager, consisting of Starfleet and rebel Maquis, must find a way to coexist and work together to find their way home which, at maximum speed, could take as long as 75 years...
