BRENT SPINER IS IN!
Brent Spiner will get at least $5 million to take his place on the bridge of the Starship Enterprise in Paramount's next "Star Trek" feature, according to sources. Jonathan Frakes will once again direct the film, the ninth bigscreen installment of the space saga, which is due to start shooting in March. Frakes will also star in the film as Cmdr. William Riker, the spaceship's second-in-command under Patrick Stewart's Capt. Jean-Luc Picard. He reportedly will get a $5 million fee plus potential bonuses of up to an additional $1 million. His payday is the second-highest among the Star Trek cast, behind the reported $9.5 million plus bonuses.
Meanwhile, in addition to playing the ship's second-in-command, Cmdr.
William Riker, Jonathan Frakes will also direct the as-of-yet incompletely
titled Star Trek IX (post-colon candidates include Transgression, Nemesis
and Millennium). According to recent interviews with Stewart and Trek
producers, will be "lighter and funnier." Word on the street is that the
stern Picard--who, unlike his playboy predecessor, Capt. James T. Kirk,
has managed to avoid human intimacy--might even get a girlfriend in this
one.
Star Trek IX News - 22/9/97
It's time for the crew of the Starshp Enterprise to lighten up a bit. Maybe it's even time for Captain Jean-Luc Picard to get a girlfriend.
That's the word from Patrick Stewart as he gears up to don the
captain's uniform once again and begin work on the ninth Star Trek film
this winter.
"I hope that when people look back on Star Trek IX, they will
remember it as the sexy, funny one.
"I feel it's time, especially after doing that tense neurotic
drama with Star Trek: Generations and then offering all the action,
tension and excitement of the Borg movie (Star Trek: First Contact)."
Stewart says there hasn't been a really funny Star Trek movie
since Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, which saw William Shatner and members
of the other Enterprise crew return to the 20th century to rescue some
whales.
Paramount hasn't decided on a title for No. 9, but candidates are
Star Trek: Millennium, Star Trek: Nemesis and Star Trek: Past and Future.
Stewart says fans of the Next Generaion TV series have always
loved the lighter episodes. "We know we can do that kind of thing, and
it's about time we did it in film."

At age 15, Farrell left her native Iowa to spend a summer in Mexico City as a foreign exchange student. Her time away from her home town made her yearn for life in a big city. After spending a year and a half modeling, Farrell began looking for a greater challenge and studied with Kate McGregor Stewart in New York. In 1983 she joined the cast of Paper Dolls.
